Abstract
University Business Schools (UBSs) are often pulled in two conflicting directions in meeting the needs of both the academic establishment and those of the business community. This results in a lack of clear purpose. In the first part of the paper, five different models of university and two different models of university business school are presented and discussed. The five models of university are: the teaching model, the research model, the vocational model, the societal model, and the multi‐purpose model. The models of university business school put forward are those to be found in America and the United Kingdom. The second part of the paper presents the findings of a survey sent to the Directors of seven English university business schools concerning the models they hold of their UBS and their views of its purpose. The responses to the questionnaire give the Directors' perceptions of academic values, the pursuit of knowledge, and their own business school. The responses confirm that a certain tension does exist within UBSs as to the domain of their purpose. It would seem that before suggestions can be put forward, and plans made about the future of UBSs, it is necessary to clarify the present situation. This is what the paper attempts to do.Keywords
