Abstract
The “serious business” of death is considered by many to be no laughing matter. However, humor can be an outstanding coping and communication tool in the dying process as well as a valuable asset fordealing with our own death anxieties, the death of others, and our ensuing grief. Clues for viewing deaththrough a lighter pair of spectaclescan be had by turning to the comedic arts, other ethnic cultures, and various religions. Comedian Woody Allen, the Balinese, the Tiwi, Zen, and Judaism are among the sources cited.
