Pseudocoloring encoding of depth information using Talbot effect

Abstract
When an object is placed in the Fresnel diffraction field of a grating, the Talbot or self images of the grating delineate constant range contours on the object. If the image of the object with the superimposed Talbot images is bandpass filtered and normalized, an image is generated with bright regions corresponding to the range contours. If several such images are made with different illumination wavelengths so as to produce several contours, each filtered image can be assigned a different color to produce a pseudocolor display of depth information.
