Abstract
The occurrence of poliomyelitis, in its worst form, within a few weeks after tonsillectomy in a family of 6 children, 5 of whom had been operated on for the removal of their tonsils and adenoids has been strikingly reported by Krill and Toomey.1 Bulbar poliomyelitis developed in all of the 5. Two died on the seventeenth day after the operation and 1 on the eighteenth day. The parents and the sixth, and youngest, child, 2½ years old, who had not been operated on, escaped the disease. W. L. Aycock2 has reviewed and analyzed available data in relation to the incidence of poliomyelitis following tonsillectomy, and Seydell,3 with the many such instances of the disease referred to in his article, has added to the seriousness of the discussion, as has an editorial4 in The Journal of the American Medical Association.
