Abstract
The alterations of the respiration and of the electrocardiagram, due to a disturbance of the ovarian function, are described. Both disturbances are characteristic, although they are found in other conditions associated with an imbalance of the endocrine glands. The abnormal respiration consists in deep sighing, occurring once or twice every min. The electrocardiogram shows a depression of the S-T segment, sometimes low T-waves as well, and in rare instances a prolonged P-R interval. The respiration and electrocardiogram become normal after the adm. of estrogenic hormone. The alterations are probably due to a disturbance of the circulation although it is impossible to rule out an intrinsic myocardial lesion. The changes in the electrocardiogram observed in patients with uterine fibroids are caused by the same mechanism. The circulatory complaints in woman with ovarian dysfunction are probably not due to simple cardiac neurosis; they explain the sudden decompensation of patients with organic heart lesions in the climacterium. Keywords
