Epidemiology of Movement Disorders

Abstract
This chapter reviews current progress in the epidemiology of the following movement disorders: idiopathic Parkinson’s disease, essential tremor, Huntington’s disease, tardive dyskinesia, tic disorders, and dystonias. Each disorder is considered separately, including a brief definition, discussion of particular problems encountered in epidemiologic investigations, summary of current data concerning the magnitude and distribution, and a list of any factors which may increase the risk of developing the disease. Since epidemiologic investigations have been much more extensive in some fields than others, sections vary accordingly. In each one, the material provided is an overview, rather than a comprehensive listing of all publications. The final section embraces all of the aforementioned disorders and is devoted to a discussion of therapeutic agents.
