Abstract
The partial molar volumes of hydrochloride and sodium salts of a number of α,ω-aminocarboxylic acids in water at 25°C have been measured and related to their van der Waals volumes. Volumes of proton ionization have been determined and the electrostriction of the solvent calculated. It is concluded that 5.85 ± 0.45 water molecules hydrate an amino acid, of which 3.85 ± 0.35 molecules are bound to the dipolar ends of the molecule.
