New concepts for millimetre wave optical links

Abstract
New opto-electronic components (namely a bi-electrode laser and a multimode waveguide PIN photodiode) have been realised to open the millimetre wave frequencies to lightwave. Preliminary results on the laser show a cut-off frequency of 27 GHz which is better than the best mono-electrode laser, while the photodiode has a responsivity of around 0.5 A/W with a 3 dB bandwidth greater than 60 GHz, far away from the more conventional surface illuminated PIN photodiode.
