Magnetic Transitions in Ni[(NH2)2CS]6Br2

Abstract
Heat‐capacity measurements have been made on single crystals of Ni[(NH2)2CS]6Br2 in the temperature range 1.3°—17.4°K. Two λ‐type anomalies were observed at 1.96° and 2.25°K and are associated with paramagnetic—antiferromagnetic transitions. The total entropy change associated with these transitions is 2.24 cal/mol deg and differs by approximately 2% from the expected value of R log(2S+1), where S=1 for the Ni++ ion. Approximately 78% of this total entropy change occurs above 2.25°K. A calculation based on the simple molecular field theory provided an estimate of the exchange integral as well as the temperature dependence of the sublattice magnetization. These are compared with the results from the magnetic susceptibility and nuclear magnetic resonance.
