Abstract
Rupture of a tube in ectopic pregnancy was associated with the wearing of an intrauterine contraceptive device (IUD) in two women. Both patients died from hemorrhage. Difficulty in clinical diagnosis appeared to be related to the presence of the IUD. The device probably prevents endometrial implantation and, less effectively, tubal implantation of the fertilized ovum. Consequently, the rate of tubal pregnancy is relatively increased. Possible ectopic pregnancy should be considered in the differential diagnosis of an acute abdomen in a woman using an IUD.
