Abstract
We calculate the effective action to one-loop order for a gauge theory in curved spacetime. We obtain explicitly the full dependence on the scalar curvature R. At large curvature, the effective action is dominated by logarithmic terms which induce asymptotic freedom of the gauge coupling constant. This phenomenon is already significant at scales much below the Planck scale. Keywords
