Abstract
The band structure of CuCl has been calculated from first principles using the layer method. It is hoped that the calculation can help to resolve the recent speculation concerning the existence of a small indirect band gap leading to possible high-temperature superconductivity. A direct gap of 3.1 eV and an indirect gap of 5.6 eV has been found; this provides no support for the small-band-gap model described in the literature. Keywords
