Abstract
The order-of-magnitude discrepancy between the predictions of the weak-coupling theory of charge-density-wave transitions and the observations is rectified by construction of a microscopic strong-coupling theory. The essential ingredients of the theory are the strong wave-vector dependence of electronically induced anharmonicity and mode-mode coupling which are shown to strongly depress the transition. Keywords
