Abstract
Published measurements on arcs in orifice flows have been analysed, and it is shown that in spite of their large radiation losses, they have the scaling characteristics of a constant shape parameter model. The momentum balance of arcs confined in convergent nozzle flows is then examined, and it is shown that steady-state solutions can exist for all arcing conditions, including the fully blocked condition. It is further shown that a constant shape parameter arc model cannot satisfy the momentum equation for convergent nozzles with an area ratio of less than 2.7:1.Keywords
