Abstract
The endemic New Zealand carabid genus Holcaspis Chaudoir is revised. Seven new species are described: H. stewartensis, Stewart Island; H. falcis, Mackenzie Basin; H. bathana, Mt St. Bathans; H. implica, from Southland to the Rakaia River; and H. tripunctata, Marlborough. Holcaspis vexata Broun, H. intermittens Chaudoir and H. punctigera Broun are raised from the synonymies established by Britton, and H. ovatella perbona Broun is synonymised with the nominotypical form. Holcapsis longiformis (Sharp) is found to be synonymous with H. angustula Chaudoir, and H. placida Broun is raised from the synonymy for H. angustula sensu Britton. Lectotypes are designated for species described from syntypic series. A key to species is given, together with a discussion of the distribution and speciation of the genus.
