Induction of Cutaneous Hypersensitivity to Tracheobronchial Mucosa in Rabbits1,2

Abstract
Rabbit tracheobronchial mucosa (RTBM) when used with Freund''s adjuvant in 4 doses totaling 0.06 mg of RTBM produced a delayed hypersensitivity when skin tested. The occurrence of the response was maximal at 8 weeks, although positive responses occurred at 4 weeks. There was very little, if any, similar reaction to several other rabbit tissue antigens when tested by the same method. Reasons for this type of experimentation and possible association are discussed in regard to chronic bronchial diseases seen in humans. Some of the similarities and dissimilarities between the present experimental model and others, especially those in which circulating antibodies are invoked, are presented.
