Acquired HPV Lesions Compared in Laser and Nonlaser Users

Abstract
A comparative study was conducted to determine the incidence of human papilloma virus (HPV) infections acquired in practitioners treating warts by both laser and nonlaser methods. In our first survey conducted by a questionnaire sent to laser users, we discovered a high incidence of acquired hand lesions among the dermatologists using the CO2 laser. The incidence was significant when compared to other specialties. These results initiated a comparative study between laser users and nonlaser users in dermatology The response indicated that direct contact with the HPV lesion rather than the laser plume was responsible for acquiring a lesion. Preventive methods are suggested for control of viral transmission during laser surgery.
