THE USE OF RADIOIODINE FOR THE DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT OF THYROID DISEASES

Abstract
Radioiodine (I131) has been administered to 1000 patients and the thyroid uptake determined at 2,4,10 and 24 hours, urinary excretion of iodine measured, and the Blondal ratio and PBl31I studied. Of the cases studied 208 had hyperthyroidism, 44 hypothyroidism, 10 thyroiditis, 32 thyroid neoplasms, 53 high uptake goiters, 161 normal uptake goiters and the remainder of the patients had no thyroid disease diagnosed. In certain cases triiodothyronine suppression or thyrotropin stimulation tests were used. Basal metabolic rate and blood cholesterol were also determined. It was concluded that diagnosis of thyroid disease cannot be based on any individual test but must be based on the evaluation of all tests.
