Folic Acid, Hypersegmented Polymorphonuclear Leukocytes and the Uremic Syndrome

Abstract
Hypersegmentation of the polymorphonuclear leukocyte was noted in 14 of 19 patients with severe renal failure. We believe the increased lobe count to be a consequence of mild folate deficiency since hypersegmentation in the dialysis patient disappeared following folate supplementation. A linear relationship between serum and dialysate folate was evident when patients had received supplemental folate. The losses of folate during hemodialysis under physiological conditions are presumably responsible for the mild folate deficiency although other factors, such as food preparation, may play a contributing role.
