Decay Parameters forΣ±→nπ±

Abstract
In this paper, we present measurements of the decay parameters ψ± for Σ±nπ±. The usual decay parameters α, β, and γ are related to φ by the equation β=(1α2)12sinφ and γ=(1α2)12cosφ. Polarized Σ± were produced by the reactions KpΣ±π in the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory's 25-in. hydrogen bubble chamber. The average momentum of the incident K beam was 385 MeV/c. The measurements of φ± were made by observing the left-right asymmetry in the np interactions of those decay neutrons that subsequently scattered on the hydrogen in the bubble chamber. We obtain φ=14±19 deg and φ+=143±29 deg. Since γ=(|s|2|p|2)(|s|2+|p|2), this shows that Σnπ takes place predominantly in the s wave, whereas Σ+nπ+ is dominated by p-wave decay. These results are in agreement with the Δl=12 rule.
