Abstract
Experimental results for an axial arc column in the steady flow behind the shock front in a shock tube are presented. Tests were made at currents between 5 A and 150 A for free-stream Mach numbers of 04, 07, 10 and 13 in nitrogen gas at a pressure of one atmosphere. A semi-empirical heat transfer theory is proposed and an excellent correlation of the voltage gradient to current data is found. Keywords
