Abstract
The clinical laboratory has a pivotal role in the delivery of medical care. Excellence in clinical laboratories has long been an aim of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. To this end, the State Laboratory Institute has had an active Laboratory Improvement Program since 1939. In addition to providing training programs and consultations, theLaboratory Improvement Program conducted proficiency testing, a procedure that involves the periodic receipt and examination of unknown simulated clinical specimens.
