Abstract
Four patients with severe juvenile diabetes, on whom hypophysectomy had been performed to alleviate retinopathy and nephropathy, were given 10 mg of human growth hormone (HGH), (two doses in one of these cases). After 12 to 24 hours there was a marked intcrease in blood and urine sugar, and acetonuria appeared. Additional doses of insulin proved necessary. In two nondiabetic subjects three times the amounts of HGH did not result in any changes in the blood sugar values. In one nonhypophysectomized patient with diabetes, treatment with HGH resulted in an increase in blood sugar and glucosuria but not in acetonuria. In two nondiabetic cases of panhypopituitarism there was a slight rise in the postprandial values of blood sugar.
