Calcitonin (Thyrocalcitonin)

Abstract
CALCITONIN is a calcium-regulating hormone secreted by the thyroid gland and the ultimobranchial bodies. Collectively, the cells involved in its secretion constitute an endocrine system only recently appreciated. In response to hypercalcemia, they release a polypeptide hormone that rapidly lowers blood calcium by inhibiting bone resorption. The active principle has been isolated, its composition determined, and many of its properties defined. The hormone may play a part in a number of clinical conditions and, in addition, may have therapeutic uses.Historical AspectsThe discovery of this new hormone was an exciting by-product of an otherwise academic reexamination of long held . . .
