Abstract
Three cases with renal damage are presented in detail which the authors believe represent the effects of long-term ingestion of phenacetin containing analgesics. Case 1 had severe renal insufficiency and pathologically showed interstitial nephritis. There is good evidence that infection played no role in the development of the renal lesions in this patient. Cases 2 and 3 had papillary necrosis and did have pyelonephritis. The literature is briefly reviewed and the pathogenesis of the nephropathy is discussed. Keywords
