Abstract
Data on the relationship of particular types of psychoses to diseases of specific organs were collected in a survey of 1600 patients in a Canadian mental hospital. The physical disorders which were sought included peptic ulcer, bronchial asthma, diabetes, arthritis, hyperthyroidism, and high blood pressure. Significant positive associations were found between peptic ulcer and the manic type of manic-depressive psychosis; between elevated blood pressure and involutional melancholia; between elevated blood pressure and disorders of aging. Elevated blood pressure was negatively related to epilepsy and to catatonic dementia praecox. No relationship could be found between a particular type of psychosis and bronchial asthma, diabetes mellitus, rheumatoid arthritis, and hyperthyroidism. Keywords
