Abstract
A substance may be estrogenic if it has a large, rigid and inert molecular structure with 2 active hydrogen bond-forming groups at an optimum distance of 8.55 A. from one another. Trans-p,p ''-dihydroxyazobenzene is an estrogen and shows estrogenic activity when 10-15 mg. are injected subcut. into spayed rats. If the active groups are at a distance of 9-10 A. and have weaker hydrogen bond-forming character, the substance may have androgenic activity. A larger dosage is necessary to produce an androgenic effect than an estrogenic effect.
