Abstract
Samples of maternal blood, cord blood and whole placental tissues were analysed for fluoride. The fluoride intake from drinking water of all investigated cases varied between 0.06 ppm F up to 0.9 ppm F. One group of women was supplemented daily by sodium fluoride tablets. The results suggest that when the fluoride intake is low fluoride freely passes through the placenta, but when the fluoride intake is high, the placenta plays a regulatory role and protects the fetus from excess. Keywords
