Abstract
There is a close correlation between hemispheric dominance for speech and maintenance of wakefulness. A white softening located in the dominant hemisphere for speech is accompanied by an initial loss of consciousness, but a white softening in the minor hemisphere always starts with a normal state of consciousness. In a small number of cases, there is vocal dominance in maintaining normal consciousness. White softenings in the dominant hemisphere for speech produce disorders of consciousness in the clinical picture that are more severe and early than those seen with white softenings in the minor hem isphere.
