Abstract
To overcome the shortcomings, particularly with respect to infection, of ureterosigmoidostomy, a new operation was devised. In 6 dogs an isolated loop of sigmoid colon into which both ureters had been transplanted was substituted for the bladder following total cystectomy. Five dogs are alive and well 5-11 mos. following operation. Detns. of their wt., total plasma protein, non-protein N and renal phenolsulfonphthalcin excretion made throughout this study have substantiated with well-being of these animals and their satisfactory renal status. Dog No. 8 succumbed 3 weeks postoperatively with hypoproteinemia, extensive necrosis of the liver and pyonephrosis of the right kidney. In 2 dogs the blood supply to the sigmoid colon was found to be inadequate to allow isolation of a loop of bowel. This may well be a limiting factor in the application of this operation.
