Penicillin Dentifrice and Dental Caries Experience in Children

Abstract
Clinical and radio-graphic oral examinations were made of institutionalized boys, 8-15 yrs. of age. Initial susceptibility to dental caries was estimated by 2 oral Lactobacilli counts. Tooth powder was distributed individually in bottles. The exptl. powder contained 1000 U. of penicillin per g.; the control powder contained none. After 1 yr. the clinical, radiographic and bacteriologic examinations were repeated. Of 163 Lactobacilli counts, the remainder, 80 were in the exptl. group., and in 50% of these, significant reduction of the index was observed. 40% of the 53 controls showed the same significant drop. Clinical reduction of caries activity did not parallel these group differences in susceptibility classification. Lack of cooperation of all the subjects undoubtedly influenced the results obtained.
