Abstract
THE prostaglandins are a recently identified group of unsaturated cyclic fatty acids that possess diverse biologic activities, including potent vasodepressor and nonvascular smooth-muscle-stimulating properties. Before discussing the renomedullary prostaglandins and their possible relation to an antihypertensive renal function, I should like to survey historical developments that led to the identification and characterization of these compounds. Most of the literature concerning prostaglandins has appeared within the last five years, and it is expanding with extraordinary rapidity. I shall limit the discussion of the pharmacologic aspects of these lipids to their hemodynamic and vascular homeostatic effects. The biologic activity of the seminal . . .This publication has 11 references indexed in Scilit:
