Abstract
By means of protection tests in mice, it was shown that immunization with atypical mycobacteria representing Runyon''s Groups I, II, and III gives partial protection against infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis. A photochromogenic strain (Group I, M. kansasii) equaled or surpassed BCG in protective power. Attempts at immunizing mice with atypical mycobacteria against infection with M. tuberculosis, var. bovis were less successful, although, in the case of immunization with M. kansasii and M. tuberculosisvar. avium, a limited protection was observed. BCG vaccination of mice proved capable of conferring a significant degree of protection against a pathogenic photochromogenic strain (M. kansasii).
