Equivalent Width Due to Two Overlapping Lines*

Abstract
The equivalent width, or integrated absorptance, of two unequal, overlapping absorption lines is equal to the sum of the individual equivalent widths minus an overlap correction term Δ. A method is given for rigorous evaluation of the correction. The rigorous result is unwieldy in the general case, but for the special case of two lines widely separated, the correction term reduces to tractable form. However, an approximate solution is given that is shown to introduce relatively small error for all cases considered, and is quite convenient to use.
