Structure of a Lucerne Population (Medicago sativa L.) and Dynamics of Stem Competition for Light During Regrowth

Abstract
(1) Lucerne plants contain two populations of stems originating from either axillary or crown buds which differ in their rates of appearance and senescence. (2) The rates of plant disappearance during regrowth can be explained by differences in the amounts of radiation intercepted by the two types of stem. Competition for light seems to be the most important factor. (3) Competition between stems increases as conditions become more favorable for growth.
