Abstract
The subject is treated under the 3 main heads indicated in the title the origin of blood sugar from liver glycogen, from fat, and from protein, but not from muscle glycogen; its regulation by the pancreas, anterior hypophysis, thyroid, adrenal cortex, by the homeostatic mechanism in the liver, and by emergency mechanisms; and its utilization as evidenced by measurements of the R.Q. in isolated tissue and intact animals, or of blood sugar in liverless animals, or of carbohydrate concs. in the body before and after insulin adm. or some other relevant procedure. The review is unusually critical. The author emphasizes that the level of blood sugar, the D:N ratio, the R.Q., ketosis, etc. are products of dynamic balance. With patent reasonableness, he often derives from other workers'' published data conclusions different from those which they drew themselves. This publication has 86 references indexed in Scilit:
