Abstract
The findings of an interpretive field study into the socialization of proactive, elementary novice teachers are reported. The way the novice teachers implemented their goals during their first semester of inservice teaching and the key factors that facilitated or constrained the development of these proactive teachers are described. School‐based teacher induction programs are discussed in light of the study's findings. Keywords
