Outbreaks of Food-Borne Disease in the United States, 1975

Abstract
In 1975 a total of 497 outbreaks of food-borne disease affecting 18,260 persons, were reported from 43 states and Guam. The number of outbreaks increased by 9% from the number in 1974 and was the largest ever reported in a single year. The number of persons ill from food-borne diseases, also, continued to increase and in 1975 was the highest since 1970. An etiology was confirmed in 191 (38%) of the outbreaks, slightly fewer than 1974 (44%). Bacteria caused 123 (64%) of the confirmed outbreaks, chemicals 43 (23%), parasites 22 (12%), and viruses 3 (1.6%).
