Abstract
BECAUSE high titers of circulating thyroid antibodies are present in the serums of patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis, and a similar lymphocytic thyroiditis occurs in animals immunized with Freund's adjuvant and saline extracts of homologous thyroid glands, Hashimoto's thyroiditis has been considered an autoimmune disease.1 , 2 Cortisol (hydrocortisone) or cortisol-like compounds3 , 4 have been used in the treatment of other diseases that some investigators believe are associated with autoimmunity.
