Abstract
To determine whether the saliva was the deciding factor in determining whether the individual was a taster or a non-taster for phenyl-thio-carbamide (PTC), expts. were done in which satd. solns. of PTC in tap water, in taster''s saliva, and in non-taster''s saliva were placed on the dried tongues of both tasters and non-tasters. In none of these tests could individuals taste PTC unless they were tasters, and unless the saliva used were their own. Thus to be a taster requires proper "taste apparatus" and proper saliva. Keywords
