Resistance and Cross-Resistance of Escherichia coli Mutants to Anticancer Agents: Nitrogen Mustard and Nitromin

Abstract
The cross-resistance relationships among 7 mutants of Escherichia coli strain S selected for resistance to nitrogen mustard and nitromin are described. The data for 2 first-step and 2 second-step nitrogen mustard-resistant mutants and 3 first-step nitromin-resistant mutants to 7 radiomimetic chemicals, UV light, 6-diazo-5-oxo-L-norleucine, and penicillin are presented. Three qualitatively different radioresistant mutations have been established on the basis of the cross-resistance patterns. These different radioresistant mutations all confer equal resistance to UV light and, hence, would be indistinguishable by this criterion alone.
