Pancreatic Ferments in the Duodenal Fluid in Mumps

Abstract
Amylase and lipase concentrations in duodenal fluid in 22 cases of mumps were determined. The concentration of pancreatic ferments was below normal in 14 of 22 cases (63.6%). This suggested that there is subclinical pancreopathy in many cases of mumps, but such an involvement of pancreas is transient because in the cases which were followed up, pancreatic ferments in the duodenal fluid returned to normal within a month. It is presumed that abdominal pain in mumps is closely connected with subclinical pancreopathy.
