Abstract
SUMMARY: A dose-response line for the Hooker-Forbes test using progesterone dissolved in arachis oil and CHI mice was determined and the results were compared with those of Iselstöger & Ploberger [1955] who used a modified technique and mice of a different strain. Over a limited range of concentrations of progesterone the response was linear or close to linear. The method is likely to be most useful for detecting 'progestin' and for estimating progestational activity approximately in terms of progesterone. For the latter purpose comparison of the median effective doses would be better than a comparison of doses causing positive responses in all or almost all mice tested. However, it seems that, because of the steep dose-response line with CHI mice, use of the latter method would probably give estimates of reasonable accuracy if sufficient mice were used at each dose level.
