Abstract
An electron‐spin‐resonance study has been made of chlorine atoms adsorbed on a silica‐gel surface at 77°K. The experimental results indicate that the orbital degeneracy has been removed as a result of the electrostatic interaction with the surface and is, we believe, the first example of detection of trapped halogen atoms. From the experimental results an estimate of 2.7×1017 V/cm2 has been made for the electric‐field gradient at the position of the chlorine atom. Keywords
