Abstract
The topics treated for the human subject are total energy cost of breathing; mechanical work (both theoretical and measured) required from the muscles of breathing; mechanical efficiency of breathing; optimal frequency of breathing; and the work of breathing at relatively high ventilations, for the regulation of CO2 tension, in muscular exercise, at reduced barometric pressures, in relation to body size, and in disease. A short section deals with similar studies in the horse and dog. Keywords
