Measurement of Blood Flow in the Human Hand With Radioactive Potassium

Abstract
The uptake of radiopotassium by the human hand was studied as a function of time after the single intravenous injection of K42Cl. After a smooth rise, the percentage of uptake stabilized at 0.25% of the injected dose in normal hands; this indicates a hand blood flow 0.25% of the cardiac output and is equivalent to a perfusion rate of .042 ml/gm/min. This value is raised to 0.131 ml/gm/min. in reactive hyperemia after 3 minutes of arterial occlusion. The limitations of the method are discussed. Submitted on January 28, 1958
