Components of Axillary Bud Inhibition in Rose Plants. III. Effect of Stem Orientation and Changes of Bud Position on the Stem by Budding

Abstract
Laying rose [Rosa] stems horizontally caused bud breaking along the stem of all the upward-oriented buds and inhibition of the downward-oriented buds. Shoot growth was intermittent; a long shoot was succeeded by a short shoot. Bending the stem caused growth of a strong shoot close to the bend and another strong shoot close to the distal end. Upper buds which are uninhibited in situ were inhibited when budded on the basal part of the stem; basal buds retained part of the inhibition when they were budded on the upper part of the stem.
