NATURAL HISTORY OF LUPUS ERYTHEMATOSUS DISSEMINATUS

Abstract
The natural history of lupus erythematosus disseminatus was studied in a group of 44 observed patients and 279 obtained from the literature to determine the expected course of the disease without the therapeutic use of potent antiphlogistic agents. The criteria used in diagnosis are outlined. The clinical and laboratory features are presented and autopsy findings in 17 patients are discussed. The duration and course of the disease are evaluated. While the prognosis is unfavorable, over 20% remain alive for periods in excess of five years. Use of potent antiphlogistic therapeutic agents does not seem to have changed this expected mortality.
