Abstract
Increasing numbers of community development trainees and practitioners suggest a need to address two problems: How do we assess the impact of practitioner efforts? and, How do we define and measure desirable levels of field performance? The extensive literature on performance assessment in education, medicine, and industry is used to (1) outline what is known about the general nature of professional level performance, (2) suggest what problems are likely to be encountered in assessing community developers, and (3) offer several techniques as a starting point for performance assessment in community development. Keywords
