Abstract
Lumisterol, tachysterol and vitamin D are intermediate products, suprasterol I and suprasterol II are end products of u.v. irradiation of ergosterol. These substances are produced serially in the order named, except the last 2, which are formed simultaneously and independently. None of the changes is reversible. The wave length of the light used is important. Light of 310 v[mu] wave length is most effective in transforming ergosterol into lumisterol, which is subject to only sjight further change by this particular irradiation. Light of 280 m[mu] changes lumisterol into tachysterol, which is sensitive to a larger range of wave lengths. Therefore the final product depends upon the type of ultraviolet irradiation used. The chemical procedures for identifying and separating the various substances are given in detail. This publication has 1 reference indexed in Scilit:
